Due to the dependencies for the Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter I tend to use disk2vhd due to the simplicity.  Simply create the VHD, then create a virtual machine using the existing hard disk that disk2vhd creates.

To create a Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) from a physical disk drive for a Hyper-V image.
